iX 2008 Conference in Singapore
Preparation of iX2008 conference has finally started it course. People definitely are going to have higher expectations of the this year on what Singapore IT Federation is going to do to. Perhaps they will do more talks to convince the CEOs of the concept of SaaS in enterprises, probably they are going to talk companies out of the RIM Blackberry, into Apple iPhone. I guess only IDA knows the best as the time is approaching really fast.
Meanwhile, as I have discovered the rare copy of the iX2007 conference video on my laptop. I am going to upload them onto the Internet as part of the contribution from The Digital Movement.
So stay tuned and wait for the video as they are uploaded
PS: I was working on an Internet show idea for a while last year, but dropped due to work commitment. And I am going to pick it up again today.
Update 1: I have uploaded the video in the post iX 2007 video uploaded, check it out.
God created the bloggers and then …
I just came across this piece of comics by Geek And Poke. As a Christian and IT loving person, I simply find it hilarious to read the what is written there. DMCA to us is always a hot topic to discuss. File Sharing = Stealing? If the person could not win the market by forcing them to buy the cd, shall he prevent people from copying the song from his friends as well?
Vidfest is going on Vancouver now, check the post by Bill Claxton:
- From Cinema to Cellphone (I tempted to write Handphone..)
- Sci-Fi in Lo-Fi and HD (Hmm.. Tricky Title)
This is really an interesting event we shall watch out for, perhaps it will come to Singapore one day.
Working Less is More
The awesome writer Tim Ferris wrote a book called “The 4-Hour Workweek“, which talks how about how to cut down your time wasters in every day’s life.
Here is not-that-short interview by Robert Scoble.
There is a nice book excerpt on Life Hacker here.
I have read the book once this Month, and I am going to read the book again in one month’s time. Once thing I learnt from the book is the 20/80 percent rule. And one application of that is to find the 20% people which brings 80% of your happiness in your life. And talk to them more often.
Working less brings more opportunities for you to broaden your thinking and expand your vision, for the product of being effective in working is an improvement in amount of free time you have.
However, that does not mean you are able to get away with less effort. “Working Less” sounds deceptive enough as “Working fewer hours with same effort”
The secret of getting more productive through less time of work is to put in more efforts, not less. Why? I think you know the answer
Art of Innovation
Guy Kawasaki talks about The Art of Innovation.
He talks about a total ten points:
- Make meaning
- Make mantra
- Jump to the next curve
- Roll the DICEE
- Don’t worry, be crappy
- Polarize people
- Let a hundred flowers blossom
- Churn, baby, churn
- Niche thyself
- Follow the 10/20/30 rule
They make you passionate, be it positive or negative, they don’t make you feel neutral.
You should dare polarize people: don’t let people feel what you do is indifferent to all.
His communication style is great, messages are right to the point, and super hilarious
Take a look and you’ll love it
Oh, by the way, he wrote this as well Speaking as a Performing Art.
I learnt a lot from that well-written article, and well-spoken keynote, how about you?
Why we choose to be in TDM
If you have not used RSS yet, here is a simple instructional video for doing so. It saves your time and effort of grabbing new information from the Internet.
Most of the companies today has the mentality of driving people to be productive. Instead of motivating intrinsically, they give extrinsic rewards, so people would work hard ensure, take sufficient exams or perhaps do something more extreme to ensure that they could climb up another step on the corporate ladder.
People’s passion and energy either dries up doing this day after day, or they start devoting them into other areas, which results in job-hopping.

The Digital Movement(TDM), is one organization I am in for nearly 8 months. I knew some of the people a while ago; longest dates back to 2+ years ago.
Here is a little history of TDM from Dinois Chuia, in which she mentioned things like the old name of TDM, how we got the support from NTUC and more.
Today, we had a little discussion about TDM history:
And why each one of us would like to be in the TDM
Estee + Some Questions:
Zhen Hoe + A screaming me:
I actually think I did make many valid points through the screaming session, however, ZhenHoe shut down during the discussion and therefore, nothing got done at the end of the day.
Swati (A MBA Graduate):
Me (Me la..) :
Dionis (A lot of management) :
Together we can make a difference!

Hockey in Singapore
Hockey:
BrE a game played on grass by two teams of 11 players, with sticks and a ball
American Equivalent: field hockey
AmE a game similar to hockey, but played on ice
British Equivalent: ice hockey
I was watching the kids playing hockey in Fuji Ice Palace in Jurong East – they were having so much fun with each other.
They kids, grouped in two teams were competing hard with each other. Staring at the swinging of the hockey sticks, I was recalling hard the childhood I once hard.
I spent more time with my books, my subject exercise and my lessons than any other activists, even sleeping. All the things in my mind at that time was "how to solve a problem more efficiently and effectively" – most probably Math/Physics/Chemistry. Having read the article "Art of Powerful Questions", I started to think differently, with a change of attitudes and goals in my life .
I admire the kids for their extremely positive attitude towards the team members and clear objective to achieve during the game.

NEXUS 2007 Video is OUT!
Nexus 2007 is one of the biggest event held by The Digital Movement so far. There are many interesting talks by people like Nathan Torkington, James Seng, Kelvin Lim. Yon hear them talking form the link above if prefer not seeing these people’s faces.
So here we brings you a series of video archives of what happened on that day, hope you enjoy it! (I spent 3 weeks’ time working on the videos: capturing the videos from the poor DVDs and DV tapes, editing them in Edius Pro and Avisynth. Editing video is really a tough job especially if you aim for higher video quality and smaller file size.)
I have several other tape that have not been edited and compressed yet, for example, the GeekOut recoding, and some interviews done by TDM crew members (**REALLY REALLY bad audio quality** Any suggestions?). How many of you out there are interested in them?
Blogging with a Title
A sizable number of blogging tools has this topic centric idea implemented in their interface. An example is as follows:
Title:What do I need to blog with a topic in mind?
To a great extend, this “topic centric” design forces people to think around a main point. You will always hear from people who seldom blog asking this question: “What to blog? I have nothing to blog about.” But is there really nothing happening in their life they could write down, or the amount of things and events taking place around in their life is so overwhelming that they have no clue how to organize them under different titles on which that they could write down their ideas?
For most of people, we will agree on the latter point: organizing disordered matters into ordered topics. There are really indeed interesting things taking place every second – be it in the real world, near you and I, or in the virtual world, on the Internet. We are observing them every day, unavoidably. We cannot shut our eyes when people are in front talking, treating them as non-existing objects with voice capabilities; we cannot ignore a piece of email with a title like “Girl running naked in NUS, as seen by thousands of students.”, reading it as “Aliens found in School of Computing, NUS”; and we cannot stare at a book, as if we are staring at a log, disguising itself into a deceiving shape that looks very much like an ordinary book.
Many a time we choose to ignore something because either we do not want to acknowledge the importance of the item in our life, or its importance has no value to our life. Take an annoying big black fly buzzing loudly around you with its fat wings. We do find it uncomfortable when we are concentrating our every single nerve in the brain to prepare for the upcoming history exam. However, the option to snap the fly from the middle of its tiny fragile body is beyond our ability. So what do we do instead of flying around to catch the fly? We IGNORE the fly, treating it as non-existing object with strange voice capability.
The more we ignore, the less we categorize things into different classifications. As more and more things accumulate, piling up in our head, we could only think of two types of things, the important ant the necessary. What our leaders ask us to do is important, and what we do to live is necessary. Then we push ourselves comfortably into this loop: Important-Necessary-Necessary-Important… The longer we linger in this loop, the better we are at doing it. Living a life become simple: when the waves of things are rushing ashore towards us, we set up a barrier right in front with this “Importance & Necessity” net, capturing only those tiny fish which could squeeze through the net.
Writing up until here, I realize my life is in this mode for most of time. The fish I let through, though being of great quantity, are too tiny in size to fill my everlasting craving for food, and I constantly stop myself from capturing the big fish, for I think it takes more time to set up the net, more time to process the prey and more time to cook the meat. These are just the imagination in my mind and in fact does not have to be, if I could equip myself with a proper attitude, arm myself with a right spirit and change my attitude to be more positive and affirmative.
I want to go hunting, to be a fisher.
